The Monsoon session of Parliament is expected to begin on July 20 and last about three weeks, according to officials. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has not yet finalized the schedule. Monsoon and Winter sessions typically feature 20 sittings across four weeks, though shorter durations have occurred before. This session follows the ruling BJP’s recent election wins in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. Internal divisions within TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) are also likely to feature. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has yet to decide on requests from 20 TMC and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs for recognition as separate groups. In the Rajya Sabha, recent oaths by new and returning members have strengthened the NDA’s position. The previous session saw the government fail to pass a constitutional amendment on women’s reservation in legislatures by 2029 and Lok Sabha seat expansion. Officials are now revising the bill to raise seats evenly by 50 percent across states. Southern parties have expressed concerns over population-based seat changes.
