Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold annual summit talks with Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi on 2 July. The meeting will allow both nations to assess and expand bilateral cooperation in trade investment defence and related fields. The leaders are also set to discuss regional and international matters of shared concern at Hyderabad House. Multiple memoranda of understanding are anticipated after the discussions. Takaichi reached New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day visit marking her first official trip to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi. The visit covers the period from 1 to 3 July for the sixteenth India-Japan annual summit. Earlier plans for a meeting in Guwahati were cancelled shortly before the trip. In a special arrangement Takaichi will receive a welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. At least ten memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed following the talks. These include agreements on energy resilience biogas upstream oil and gas development critical minerals batteries artificial intelligence and pharmaceuticals. Takaichi will also address a business gathering attended by over one hundred Japanese executives where additional understandings are likely to be formalised. Talks on the Green Ammonia Project in Odisha supported by Japanese assistance are also planned. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit seeks to reinforce ties with India which holds key importance for achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific. The leaders will review progress under the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade announced during Modi’s visit to Japan in August last year. Discussions will address economic security including energy as well as growth through investment and innovation. The visit follows Modi’s trip to Tokyo in August 2025 when the two countries launched the joint vision and Japan set a target of investing ten trillion yen in India over the next decade. India and Japan maintain a special strategic and global partnership covering trade investment infrastructure defence security clean energy and emerging technologies. The meeting occurs against a backdrop of global uncertainties making collaboration between the two countries increasingly relevant.
