Heavy rainfall struck multiple areas of Delhi and the National Capital Region on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department raised its weather warning from yellow to red alert because of thunderstorms and strong winds across the region.

The department stated that light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 60-80 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, was likely over all of Delhi-NCR in the next two hours. It also predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain over the capital for the remainder of the day.

Showers were recorded in parts of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. Dark clouds and gusty winds brought relief from recent hot and humid conditions and caused temperatures to drop noticeably.

Operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport remained normal, though authorities advised passengers to confirm flight updates with their airlines.

On Wednesday the minimum temperature was 28.6 degrees Celsius amid intermittent showers and strong winds that eased the prevailing heat.

The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by July 4, the IMD said. It advanced into additional parts of the north Arabian Sea, Gujarat and several northern states on Wednesday, with favourable conditions for further progress over the next two days.
