Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated on May 28, 2026, that he anticipates hosting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi again soon. He described India’s expanding economy as a major opportunity for the Indo-Pacific. Speaking in Canberra’s parliament, Albanese noted India’s status as the world’s most populous country and its expected rise to the third-largest economy this decade. He pointed out Australia’s dual identity as a Pacific and Indian Ocean nation. The 2022 trade agreement has boosted commerce between the nations, reinforced by links in culture, education and cricket. Albanese recalled backpacking in India in 1991 and later official trips, recommending bus or train travel to appreciate local hospitality. He expressed eagerness to welcome Modi once more, aided by Australia’s growing Indian community of one million, its fastest-expanding immigrant group. This community supports the economy and small businesses. Albanese pledged backing for the group and resistance to divisive efforts. Modi last visited Australia in 2023. The speech was shared online by the Australian High Commissioner to India. Earlier, Modi met Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to discuss the strategic partnership during her Quad engagement in New Delhi.
