On April 14, 2026, Nara Lokesh, the Minister for Education, Information Technology, and Human Resource Development, initiated a 16-day journey for 21 students with disabilities from public schools to reach Everest Base Camp in Nepal. This marks what is considered the inaugural government-backed high-elevation adventure of its kind for such students in the country.

The launch occurred at the minister’s home in Undavalli. The participants, comprising eight female students, are enrolled in grades 9 through intermediate levels at state-run schools. They aim to arrive at the base camp, situated at 5,364 meters above sea level, with the trip scheduled from April 15 to 30. The group will initially head to Kathmandu to begin the adventure. This program falls under the Samagra Shiksha initiative.
