A large fire swept through a pub in Bangkok early Monday, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens of others, according to Thai officials. The blaze spread rapidly through the venue, trapping many inside until firefighters contained it.

The fire began shortly after midnight at the Na Ladprao pub in northern Bangkok, drawing a major emergency response, the Associated Press reported.

Bangkok’s governor stated that 22 of the 63 people hurt remain in critical condition.

First responders shared videos showing flames at the entrance while patrons fled. Dense black smoke filled the space quickly, hindering escapes.

Crews arrived after reports around midnight. Thailand’s prime minister visited the site and confirmed the death toll, noting others received hospital treatment.

Officials have started an investigation into the cause.

The prime minister said the fire likely began near the stage when smoke appeared from a circuit breaker. Performers saw the smoke before power failed, followed by an explosion that spread flames fast.

Decorative ceiling materials ignited, releasing toxic smoke that filled the space within minutes, the governor added.

Many victims were found near rear restrooms, suggesting attempts to escape. Most deaths resulted from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

Firefighters controlled the blaze after about 30 minutes. The interior showed extensive damage to furniture and walls.

This ranks among Thailand’s worst recent entertainment venue fires. A 2022 music pub fire in eastern Thailand killed 14. In 2009, a Bangkok nightclub blaze on New Year’s Day claimed 66 lives and injured over 200, linked to indoor fireworks.
