A group of automobile and energy specialists defended India’s E20 ethanol blending initiative on Saturday in response to public criticism. They stated that thorough tests showed no vehicle issues from the fuel. The experts noted ethanol use in Formula 1 cars and emphasized years of scientific review before adoption. During a press event, panel members addressed ongoing debate over the government mandate and social media claims about performance effects. Former EIL chief Vartika Shukla explained the blending process took time, reaching the target in December 2025 after industry tests. She highlighted goals to cut emissions and noted E20 use in nations like Canada. Toyota executive Vikram Gulati called ethanol effective, citing its history in early vehicles and racing. He linked it to lower emissions and energy security amid global events. Maruti Suzuki’s Rahul Bharti confirmed no major concerns found with E20 since the 2023 mandate, though pre-2023 vehicles remain a focus. Former IOCL chairman B Ashok said the program boosts security, farmer income, and cuts emissions without proven engine harm. The petroleum ministry issued a rebuttal to online claims, rejecting high water use figures and affirming only surplus crops are used. It noted distilleries recycle water and follow standards. Bhutan declined an E20 offer, preferring standard petrol.
