Samarth Singh, spouse of former actor Twisha Sharma who died at their home, informed investigators she had shown distress following an abortion. He said her conduct shifted after learning of her pregnancy in April and stated he had transferred Rs 7 lakh to her without giving a reason.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has assumed the inquiry from Bhopal police and filed a new FIR one day after the Supreme Court directed an impartial probe into the 33-year-old’s death on May 12.

Twisha was found deceased at the residence. Her in-laws described the death as suicide, while her parents alleged assault, harassment and murder. Samarth and his relatives maintain she acted unpredictably and deny involvement.

Samarth was detained in Jabalpur after ten days in hiding and is now in seven-day custody. Questioning revealed his replies often matched those previously given by his mother, a former judge also named in the case.

He told police the marriage was initially stable but changed after April 17 when Twisha learned she was pregnant. He said she frequently mentioned her earlier career and struggled with household duties, leading to repeated disputes.

Samarth described a planned trip to Bengaluru that Twisha cancelled to visit her brother in Ajmer. He claimed she stayed only one day before travelling to Delhi without notice, worsening tensions.

On the night of May 12, he said the couple dined, walked in the society park and watched television. He went to sleep while she spoke on the phone downstairs. Later his mother woke him after a call from Twisha’s family. They found her on the terrace and attempted resuscitation before taking her to AIIMS Bhopal, where she was declared dead.

Samarth admitted staying in Jabalpur without using his phone to avoid detection. Investigators seek to identify anyone who assisted him, but he has not named anyone.

Twisha’s relatives accuse the couple’s family of dowry demands, abuse and evidence tampering. An earlier case cited dowry death and cruelty provisions. The Supreme Court emphasised the need for a transparent inquiry into the young woman’s death.
