An IIT alumnus employed in New York has sparked online discussion after stating that his academic and professional achievements do not enhance his appeal in the marriage market of Uttar Pradesh. Akash Sampurnanand Pandey shared the remarks on X, noting that graduating from IIT-BHU, obtaining a master’s from New York University, and working as a software engineer in New York City still fall short of traditional family expectations for prospective grooms. He recalled common advice given to children in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar households: succeed in the IIT entrance exam and secure a position as a district collector. The 31-year-old described his role on the 60th floor of the World Trade Center yet observed that his lack of a government post, particularly in the civil services, reduces his standing in arranged marriage considerations within the state. The post drew numerous replies, with some users affirming the continued preference for stable public sector roles in northern India. Others suggested that attitudes are shifting and that technology careers now receive greater acceptance, though certain families still prioritize government employment and associated benefits. The exchange also revisited broader questions about the relative social value placed on elite engineering qualifications versus civil service positions in matrimonial contexts across parts of the country.
