Iran’s parliamentary speaker and lead negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated in a state television interview on Saturday that while some advancements have occurred in discussions with the United States, substantial work remains before an accord can be achieved.
On the same day, Iran declared it would once more restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz, attributing the decision to ongoing violations of agreements amid a U.S. naval embargo on its harbors.
Previously, Iran had suggested imposing a charge for safe navigation through the passage, with a high-ranking official informing CNN that paying ships would receive preference over non-paying ones.
This action has further entangled the diplomatic efforts, though Ghalibaf portrayed the developments in the Strait as a tactical success for Tehran.
‘We have not eliminated the adversary – they retain funds and armaments – but on a strategic level, they have suffered defeat against us,’ he remarked.
Ghalibaf further noted that although dialogues continue, significant disagreements persist, indicating that a resolution is not imminent. He highlighted numerous unresolved issues, with neither party ready to address conclusive conditions.
These events unfold as a tentative two-week armistice between the nations approaches its conclusion on Wednesday, leaving doubt about a possible renewal. The pause was intended to facilitate talks, yet persistent frictions, especially in the Gulf area, have intensified the strain on the process.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical conduit for a large portion of global petroleum transport, has become a central point of contention in the impasse. Iran’s latest limitations and prior idea of fee-based transit have sparked worries regarding international maritime trade and energy supplies, while solidifying stances on each side.
Nevertheless, Iranian authorities affirm their willingness to pursue negotiations, with Ghalibaf’s comments implying that Tehran views itself in a position of leverage.
