Mumbai’s ongoing monsoon rains caused another death on Sunday when a 63-year-old man was struck by a falling tree, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials reported. The accident took place near 12:40 pm in Naupada area of Kurla West, where Yunus Kundawala suffered fatal injuries. He was pulled from the debris and taken to Fauzia Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Video footage recorded the tree striking the victim. BMC staff later arrived to trim and remove the tree. At least four people have now died in the city amid continued heavy rainfall and strong winds, even though the monsoon season began later than normal. Persistent showers since the start of the week have triggered several rain-related accidents and caused widespread disruption. In a separate event a few kilometres away in Bandra East, strong winds uprooted another tree that damaged parked cars, though no one was hurt. In the same neighbourhood, a tree fell just in front of an industrialist’s security convoy, briefly halting traffic until police and BMC teams cleared the road. Falling trees have become a repeated hazard during the rains, with several deaths reported across the metropolitan region in recent days. Before this latest incident, an 11-year-old boy died when a tree hit his school bus on June 30, and another man was killed by a falling tree in Mira-Bhayandar. Open manholes have also caused fatalities; on July 2 a 55-year-old man fell into an uncovered sewer in Sakinaka while walking to work. Officials said a private contractor had removed the cover for cleaning but left the site without proper warnings.
