US President Donald Trump indicated that the temporary peace agreement with Iran had concluded, shortly after American forces conducted additional attacks on Tehran. This was in response to assaults on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. At a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump described Iranian leaders harshly and stated he no longer wished to interact with the country.
Regarding the recent memorandum of understanding signed three weeks prior, Trump declared it invalid. He expressed unwillingness to continue dealings with Iran. Oil prices increased more than three percent following these comments.
The United States and Iran have faced difficulties upholding their recent truce. Iran’s attempts to control the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global energy supplies, contribute to the tension.
Trump criticized the Iranian leadership strongly, calling them dangerous and suggesting they would use nuclear weapons if available. Although discussions between negotiators might proceed, Trump viewed them as unproductive and labeled the Iranian side as untrustworthy.
On the previous day, the United States carried out extensive strikes on over eighty military locations in Iran and reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil exports. These actions targeted surveillance, missile, and port facilities during a period of mourning for a former Iranian leader killed earlier in joint operations. Iran responded by attacking US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, claiming to have shot down a drone.
The escalation has heightened global concerns, complicating recent indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
