New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) senior figure Sanjay Singh sharply criticized the recent move by several Rajya Sabha members to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), describing it as a breach of constitutional norms and anti-defection regulations.
Singh argued that the anti-defection law prohibits any form of division or separation within legislative bodies like the Assembly, Rajya Sabha, or Lok Sabha, rendering such actions invalid under the constitution.
He claimed the MPs’ decision to align with the BJP disregarded legal and parliamentary guidelines. ‘The announcement by seven individuals to join the BJP was unlawful, improper, and contrary to established procedures,’ Singh stated. ‘This approach is entirely incorrect from a legal standpoint.’
Reaffirming his position, Singh called for severe measures against the defectors. ‘The shift by these seven AAP Rajya Sabha members is illegitimate, erroneous, unconstitutional, and violates parliamentary standards,’ he emphasized.
Singh revealed intentions to formally address the issue with the Rajya Sabha Chairman. ‘Today, I will submit a letter to the Honorable Vice President, who serves as Rajya Sabha Chairman, outlining these violations and urging the complete revocation of membership for all seven MPs,’ he explained.
He also noted that some of the MPs had been observed meeting BJP leaders prior to their official switch. ‘At least three of them were spotted visiting the BJP office the day before,’ Singh added.
This response follows a significant blow to the AAP, as Rajya Sabha members, including Raghav Chadha—previously ousted as the party’s deputy leader in the Upper House—defected to the BJP on Friday.
During a media briefing in the capital on Friday, Chadha confirmed a long-simmering division, stating that two-thirds of the party’s Upper House representatives would integrate with the BJP.
The development sparked strong backlash from AAP officials but received enthusiastic support from the BJP.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva described the transition as expected, using it to criticize AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Additionally, BJP National President Nitin Nabin greeted the new members at the party’s headquarters in Delhi. In a post on X, Nabin offered congratulations to the seven parliamentarians and urged them to contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047. (ANI)
