Following the swearing-in of the new chief minister of Kerala on 18 May, all governments in the four states and one union territory that held polls in April have assumed office. These elections occurred under the leadership of Nitin Nabin, the BJP’s new national president. The BJP and its NDA allies formed governments in Assam and Puducherry, and for the first time in West Bengal. The party secured strong mandates in Assam and West Bengal. In Kerala, the BJP achieved a breakthrough by winning three assembly seats. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP allied with the AIADMK won one seat after contesting 27. The party may need a revised electoral approach in Tamil Nadu going forward.
Nitin Nabin was appointed the 16th national president of the BJP in January. At 45, he is the youngest to hold the position. The April 2026 elections tested his organizational and leadership abilities. The results demonstrated that his appointment was not temporary. He showed political skill beyond his years and national experience.
The BJP appears to be pursuing a generational change by selecting Nitin Nabin. This move highlights the party’s capacity to promote leaders from the grassroots who hold strong ideological commitments. His age aligns with the country’s youth and their goals. The party structure is expected to shift gradually toward younger members, with new figures emerging at national and state levels. A cabinet reshuffle under PM Modi may also occur to include fresh faces. Regular consultations between the party and government should be strengthened to address public needs, including during crises such as the West Asia conflict.
Nitin Nabin prepared for the 2026 elections methodically. Ticket distribution across constituencies proceeded smoothly with minimal dissent. The campaign was planned and executed effectively. Media and social media were used strategically, resulting in few controversies. During the SIR process, local BJP units remained active, unlike some opposition parties. As party in-charge, Nabin had led victories in the 2023 Chhattisgarh assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, experience that informed his 2026 strategy.
The BJP has gained broad acceptance as a party of difference. As the world’s largest political party, it faces ongoing challenges in meeting expectations. It leads the NDA at the centre and governs directly in 16 states while participating in 21 states and UTs through the alliance. Under Nitin Nabin, the party has an opportunity to become more youthful, forward-looking and effective with nationwide reach.
Nitin Nabin has worked to align the party with the priorities of youth, the middle class and workers. With over 14 crore registered members, including about 2 crore active ones, the party must address the West Asia crisis alongside central and state governments. While elections return in 2027, stronger public outreach could yield larger support.
