Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra criticized the Congress-led state government on Thursday for allowing Pre-University lecturers to teach Classes 9 and 10 in government schools. He described the move as harmful to students and lecturers alike, warning it would reduce education quality at both secondary and pre-university stages.
Speaking to reporters, Vijayendra called for immediate withdrawal of the notification that amended the Karnataka General Services rules. The change permits newly recruited or promoted PU lecturers to be assigned to government high schools for Classes 9 and 10.
He claimed the decision was made without input from lecturers, principals, teachers, parents, students or education specialists. Vijayendra stated that the policy would affect large numbers of students and lecturers and required proper consultation and study before implementation.
The BJP leader accused the government of using a short-term fix for teacher shortages instead of filling vacant posts through regular recruitment. He argued that shifting PU lecturers would weaken focus on pre-university education and leave both levels of students underserved.
Vijayendra noted that teaching methods differ between secondary and pre-university levels. He questioned the timing of the decision in the absence of a full-time Education Minister and said the government should explain the basis for such changes.
The notification followed a draft issued in June that invited public objections. After the period ended, revised rules were issued requiring new and promoted PU lecturers to teach the specified classes. The move has faced opposition from some lecturers and political parties over concerns about teaching standards.
