The Cockroach Janta Party, which began as an online satirical effort, plans its first physical protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday concerning recent issues in India’s education system. Party spokespersons informed India Today Digital they intend to request permission on the day of the event and will proceed regardless of approval from Delhi Police.
“The protest will occur at Jantar Mantar even without permission,” said chief spokesperson Saurav Das. “We trust the Delhi Police will grant approval. The demonstration is planned to remain peaceful.”
The group confirmed it had not applied in advance, noting standard procedures require prior notice for security. Spokespersons stressed the event would stay non-violent but acknowledged uncertainty about developments on site.
Founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the protest on June 1 while in Boston and stated he would return to India to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over paper leaks, student suicides linked to NEET, and wasted efforts by examinees. This marks Dipke’s first return since the campaign launched.
“Jantar Mantar is a designated site for dissent,” Das noted. “We are hopeful Delhi Police will approve.”
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed support and may meet Dipke at the airport, though spokespersons said plans remain under review due to security concerns at the location.
The party will seek formal permission after Dipke arrives. Spokespersons said public announcements already made should have alerted authorities. They also criticized the requirement to seek approval weeks ahead, calling the current process unacceptable.
