Gurugram: Authorities at Kurukshetra University have filed a new police complaint against Digvijay Chautala, the youth state president of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), accusing him and eight other party officials of property damage and disrupting order during an event on April 7 at the university’s Dr RK Sadan hall. This follows a recent case against him linked to an alleged disturbance at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology in Hisar, Haryana.

The complaint, submitted by the university’s Chief Security Officer Anand Kumar, states that the venue was reserved on April 2 via Ajayab Singh, a Hindi department assistant professor, for an initiative aimed at curbing drug use among young people and encouraging civic involvement. It was approved as a non-political gathering.

However, the event drew 300 to 400 attendees, including students and non-students. According to the officer, no anti-drug discussions occurred; instead, political talks were given that could incite student conflicts. Reports indicate about 80 chairs were damaged along with other university assets. Security personnel and the youth and cultural affairs department alerted administrators.

The university subsequently suspended Professor Ajayab Singh.

The complaint invokes sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to property mischief, unauthorized entry, and conspiracy. It names Digvijay, JJP senior state vice-president Dr Jasvinder Khaira, event coordinator Vishal Mukumpura, and others, as confirmed by the station house officer.

In response, Digvijay explained that the JJP arranged the booking through a faculty member for the April 7 gathering, where he served as the main speaker. He claimed no issues arose during his presence, but some students reportedly damaged chairs after his departure. Party representatives met with university officials the next day, agreeing to handle repairs, which began but were halted by the administration.

He questioned the filing of the complaint, suggesting that similar damage at an event attended by Chief Minister Nayab Saini would not lead to charges against the leader. Digvijay alleged government influence behind the action.

The JJP previously partnered with the governing BJP in Haryana.

Chautala Family Criticizes Security Situation

In Hisar, police have formed a special team to investigate a Friday encounter between the convoy of former deputy chief minister and JJP leader Dushyant Chautala and a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) vehicle. The incident has escalated into a political dispute, with Dushyant claiming an officer aimed a gun at him.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kamaljeet Singh supported the CIA inspector, noting Dushyant’s breach of Y-Plus security rules by employing an unauthorized private car as a lead vehicle.

Four complaints have been received: two from Chautala and his security officer Pradeep Kumar, and two from CIA head Pawan Kumar and another officer, Raj Kumar. No formal charges have been filed yet, as statements are being collected.

The deputy superintendent refuted claims that Pawan Kumar had a weapon when exiting his vehicle. Initial findings also revealed that one of Chautala’s lead vehicles had received four speeding tickets.

The clash happened near Hisar’s old vegetable market as Dushyant and Digvijay traveled from the police station to the mini secretariat. A CIA vehicle reportedly passed the convoy’s security car, prompting the officer to exit in what observers called an intimidating way. Dushyant exited his car and tried to halt the CIA vehicle before it left.

This event has unexpectedly unified the Chautala family despite political differences.

While Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Singh Chautala, Dushyant’s uncle, has not spoken on the matter, Ranjit Singh—younger brother of INLD founder Om Prakash Chautala, who ran in the 2024 Hisar Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket and the Rania assembly election as an independent—told ThePrint on Monday: ‘If someone who served as deputy chief minister and parliament member can face such intimidation, it’s alarming to consider the situation for ordinary citizens.’
