In a reported case of human trafficking and sexual violence in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, a man has been arrested for allegedly selling his wife to strangers for Rs 50,000 with assistance from associates. Police stated the woman was subsequently held captive, sexually assaulted, and robbed of her jewellery, which the accused reportedly sold.

Seven individuals, including the woman’s husband, identified as Nikesh Patel, have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The matter surfaced during an inquiry by Palanpur West Police in Banaskantha. According to authorities, Patel had filed a missing person report on May 11, stating his wife had vanished from Palanpur city. Investigators became suspicious when Patel himself reportedly disappeared two days later. His father then filed another missing report at Palanpur East police station.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jignesh Gamit noted that the sequence raised concerns, prompting further investigation. Police traced both individuals, and questioning allegedly revealed that Patel had conspired with accomplices to traffic the woman for payment.

Investigators said Patel, along with Sanjay Thakor, Ashok Thakor and Sachin Darbar, sold the woman for Rs 50,000. The survivor claimed she was repeatedly raped and assaulted after being trafficked. Police added that the accused took her jewellery and sold it locally.

A case was registered under relevant sections for rape, trafficking, conspiracy and other offences. The Palanpur West Police team arrested seven accused, including the main suspect. Officials noted Patel has a prior criminal record involving similar allegations. Investigators continue to examine the trafficking network and roles of all involved.
