Ten Indian sailors detained in Iran since July 2025 aboard an oil tanker have been released following sustained diplomatic efforts, India’s shipping authorities announced late Tuesday.

The crew of the MV Harbour Phoenix were held after the vessel was intercepted near Jask Port, the Directorate General of Shipping stated. Officials confirmed the seafarers are now free and arrangements are being made for their swift return to India.

New Delhi and Tehran maintain longstanding ties in diplomacy and energy, while India also sustains relations with the United States and Israel. Iranian forces frequently intercept vessels accused of illegal fuel transport in the Gulf. India has relied on quiet diplomacy during talks for the sailors’ release.

No further details were given on the detention reasons or the Palau-flagged tanker. India has one of the largest merchant fleets, with many sailors active in Gulf routes. Iran has restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since attacks by the US and Israel in February. India, a top oil importer, normally obtains roughly half its crude via that passage.
