A 16-year-old girl in Jharkhand’s Koderma district died by suicide on Sunday night. Her family claims she had become depressed following the cancellation of the NEET exam she had taken.

Relatives said the girl was alone in her room completing an online practice test when the incident occurred. After she failed to respond to repeated knocks, family members forced open the door and found her hanging. They rushed her to Sadar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The girl was described as a strong student who had attended a coaching institute in Delhi after Class 10 to prepare for NEET. She had returned home confident about her performance. Her father, an LIC agent who also operates a medical store, stated that the exam cancellation caused her significant distress, though she continued studying.

The family, living in a rented house, later traveled to their ancestral village in Nawada district for the last rites. Police registered an unnatural death case after receiving a family application that did not reference NEET. A post-mortem was conducted before the body was released.

Separately, Youth Congress members protested outside Raj Bhavan, accusing authorities of irregularities and paper leaks in NEET and claiming the government had ignored students’ futures.
