Bengaluru: Karnataka’s opposition BJP has criticized the state government after Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said he has not received an official residence despite holding the post for nearly three years. The matter has developed into a political dispute, with BJP figures accusing the ruling Congress administration of showing arrogance and neglecting established democratic practices.

Ashoka has sent another letter to the Chief Secretary requesting immediate allocation of a government bungalow. He has asked for one of three properties: No.1 Kumarakrupa East, No.1 Race View Cottage, or No.2 Race View Cottage on Race Course Road in Bengaluru. Repeated appeals over recent months have received no response, he stated.

Ashoka indicated he would cease accepting house rent allowance starting in April if the allotment does not occur. BJP representatives called the situation a protest against the government’s approach. The topic arose during a meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Vidhana Soudha on the appointment of the State Human Rights Commission chairperson, where Ashoka raised the issue directly.

BJP members argued that withholding accommodation from the Leader of the Opposition undermines democratic institutions and constitutional standards. They noted that in parliamentary systems the opposition holds a key role in oversight, warranting appropriate facilities and respect. Previous administrations handled such allocations promptly without political bias, they added.

The controversy has grown because a prominent bungalow on Kumarakrupa Road is occupied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. BJP figures claimed the government has avoided providing suitable options even though alternatives exist. Ashoka has sent multiple letters to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary and met officials several times without result, according to party sources.

The party described the inaction as deliberate and linked it to broader intolerance of opposition voices. Observers suggest the dispute may increase friction amid ongoing debates over cabinet changes and governance in Karnataka. Ashoka remains at his private residence in Jayanagar, and with two years left in the term the issue has become a symbol of tensions between the parties.
