A team of Kolkata Police officials arrived at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday afternoon, prompting political discussion about the purpose. The home, known as Shantiniketan, stands on Harish Mukherjee Road in Kolkata.
The visit followed reports that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had issued notices to 17 properties linked to Banerjee over alleged unauthorised construction. Authorities had set a seven-day deadline for responses.
Officials did not confirm the exact reason, leading to speculation about possible non-compliance. The move occurs as demolition actions target suspected illegal structures connected to several Trinamool Congress leaders across West Bengal.
Media sources stated that police reached the premises around 3:50 pm. Some officials entered and stayed inside for 10 to 15 minutes before leaving with electronic equipment from the prior security setup.
The visit formed part of a security withdrawal process after the reduction of Banerjee’s earlier Z+ cover. Officers removed surveillance infrastructure installed under that arrangement.
Items taken included a large LCD screen linked to CCTV systems, DVR units, monitors, wires and other electronic devices used for security management.
The removal is seen as an administrative step tied to the rollback of enhanced protection previously given to the MP.
Banerjee had been under Z+ category protection, which included extensive surveillance systems around his residence.
With the reported scaling down of that protection, authorities began removing the associated infrastructure.
Neither Kolkata Police nor Banerjee’s office issued an official statement by the time of reporting.
The event takes place amid high political tensions in West Bengal, following multiple controversies and investigations involving ruling Trinamool Congress leaders.
