On June 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach a record 4,399 days in office, exceeding the previous mark of 4,398 days held by Jawaharlal Nehru. Adding his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat brings the total to 9,007 consecutive days in public service. These twelve years in office include several major policy decisions. Economic targets, large-scale infrastructure projects and expanded welfare programs form part of the record. National security measures have also drawn attention. From the early weeks of the government to Operation Sindoor, the stated priority has remained national security. Three weeks after taking office, Modi met senior military commanders to assess preparedness. Each year the Prime Minister has spent Diwali at border locations, visiting twelve sites over twelve years. Historical references note that the Jana Sangh called for nuclear capability after the 1962 war and 1964 tests. The 1998 Pokhran tests followed. Defence spending rose from Rs 2.27 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 7.85 lakh crore. Exports increased from Rs 686 crore to Rs 38,424 crore. Domestic production now includes several missile systems and the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. On Independence Day 2025 the Prime Minister noted reduced reliance on foreign suppliers. Operation Sindoor was completed in 22 minutes. The Great Nicobar Project is intended to support maritime security. Before 2014 several cities experienced attacks linked to groups based in Pakistan. Later measures included updated equipment for security forces, financial tracking efforts, the 2016 surgical strike, the 2019 Balakot strike and Operation Sindoor. Article 370 was revoked in 2019. On March 31, 2026 the government declared several districts free of Naxal influence. In 2024 authorities reported 290 Naxalites killed, 1,090 arrested and 881 surrendered. Roads and schools have been built in affected areas. Illegal infiltration is described as a continuing security concern.
