Questions remain over responsibility for the assault on Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee while he visited relatives of a party worker reportedly killed in post-election clashes. TMC described it as a planned attack by BJP supporters. BJP countered that it stemmed from internal TMC disputes.

Both parties have traded accusations rapidly, unsettling senior TMC figures. The party released images claiming a BJP local leader directed the crowd and challenged claims of spontaneous anger. BJP responded that those detained were recent TMC associates, suggesting factional rivalry instead.

TMC dismissed this and shared further photos naming another alleged attacker as a BJP affiliate based on online activity. Five individuals were arrested after raids using video evidence, police stated. The incident occurred as Banerjee visited Sonarpur to meet post-poll violence victims. He accused BJP activists of an assassination attempt, which the party rejected.

Crowds threw stones, eggs and insults. Banerjee wore a helmet while aides led him away amid scuffles and chants. Some attempted physical blows before security intervened. No formal complaint was filed initially. Banerjee received brief hospital treatment. Mamata Banerjee condemned BJP, while the opposition denied involvement and attributed events to local grievances. Probes continue.
