A resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district entered Pakistan without valid travel documents to meet a woman he had contacted through social media and was subsequently imprisoned after his background raised concerns. Several months later, despite reportedly finishing his term, he continues to be held at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail while relatives urge authorities to arrange his return.
The individual had been employed as a tailor in Delhi and developed an online connection with a Pakistani woman. Family members stated that the relationship evolved over time.
Relatives reported last hearing from him on October 30, 2024, noting he had left personal papers behind before departing. They learned of his illegal entry and detention only after related videos appeared on social platforms about 20 months later.
According to the family, an initial attempt to reach Pakistan in August 2024 failed, but he succeeded in crossing on October 15, 2024. After the woman declined marriage, he remained in the country and found employment while maintaining phone contact with relatives.
Difficulties arose on December 27, 2024, while he tended livestock. Locals reportedly noticed his accent and alerted police, leading to his arrest for unlawful entry and a court appearance. A video from the court premises later circulated online, showing him assuring his family and mentioning a conversion.
He is still held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. Relatives say his sentence has ended but release awaits completion of repatriation procedures. They have sought help from the government and External Affairs Ministry. The Aligarh administration has submitted paperwork multiple times, and the local MP previously contacted the ministry. An Indian-origin woman in London is assisting with legal efforts in Pakistan.
