Hundreds of young people gathered in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday for a “Cockroach Rally” protesting unemployment, inflation and comments attributed to a Supreme Court judge. Participants carried placards stating “We Want Work, We Want Life, We Want Respect” and marched from the Gandhi Museum to Thamukkam Grounds.

The event was backed by student groups linked to left parties, including the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Students’ Federation of India, along with supporters of the online “Cockroach Janata Party.” The group began as a meme page after remarks allegedly comparing unemployed youths to cockroaches and has since grown into an anti-establishment platform.

The page gained millions of followers within days across social media. Authorities later blocked its main account under IT rules citing security concerns, though new accounts appeared quickly. Organisers described the movement as youth-driven and focused on jobs, paper leaks and accountability.

Similar actions have occurred elsewhere, including a costumed protest in Mathura. Critics argue the imagery and rapid spread aim to turn online frustration into coordinated street demonstrations.
