The possible advantages of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy continue to accumulate. Originally created for diabetes treatment, these injections are now used by millions for weight management. Emerging data indicate effects that reach beyond metabolic changes. As semaglutide and liraglutide gain widespread use, researchers observe consistent trends of reduced disease rates including conditions affecting the brain, kidneys, heart, liver, and cancer. Three recent observational studies presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago point to specific benefits for breast cancer. Findings indicate that GLP-1 users show about 30 percent lower likelihood of developing the disease. Diagnosed patients also face roughly half the risk of progression and a 6 percent lower chance of mortality. One study analyzed records from over 110,000 women aged 45 to 80 with elevated body mass index. Nearly 14 percent had received GLP-1 prescriptions. Users showed a 30.5 percent reduced diagnosis rate after adjustments for age, race, body mass index, breast density, and diabetes. The lead researcher noted the observational design limits causal claims but supports further examination of these drugs for cancer prevention. A second analysis of more than 12,000 cancer patients found lower progression rates among GLP-1 users compared with those on alternative diabetes treatments. Breast cancer advancement occurred in 10 percent of GLP-1 recipients versus 20 percent in the comparison group. A third study of 137,493 breast cancer cases linked at least three months of GLP-1 use to a 6 percent improvement in five-year survival. Authors call for additional research to clarify mechanisms. GLP-1 drugs replicate natural hormones that curb appetite and support weight reduction while also influencing inflammation and immune responses. Experts emphasize that effects may extend beyond weight loss alone. Current projections estimate over 320,000 new U.S. breast cancer diagnoses this year.
