Conservationists often raise endangered species in captivity before release. While this improves survival rates, animals may fail to recognize predators later. Researchers tested whether training pregnant mothers could help. In a study of the critically endangered Pacific pocket mouse, pregnant females were exposed to a live kingsnake or a control rope. Those near the snake received a water spray. After birth, offspring behavior was observed at 30 days. Daughters of trained mothers showed increased vigilance, including scanning and freezing, near snakes. Sons showed no difference. No survival benefit was detected after release, though sample sizes were small. The findings suggest maternal experience can shape offspring responses in ways relevant to reintroduction programs.
