Researchers in Germany discovered that solar panels placed on rewetted peatland create habitats for several bird species while producing renewable energy and potentially storing carbon. A University of Greifswald study published in Ecological Solutions and Evidence examined bird diversity at a solar site on restored peatland in northern Germany surrounded by drained farmland. The area supported threatened species and an unusual combination of birds from farmland wetland and woodland habitats. Lead author Hanna Rae Martens observed wetland birds such as reed bunting and endangered meadow pipit confirming successful rewetting along with other species using panels as perches for catching insects. Most peatlands in the UK and Germany remain degraded from drainage and farming which causes significant greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Rewetting cuts emissions and aids biodiversity yet prevents many crops from growing and requires decades for full recovery. German incentives support solar installations on such sites as an income alternative. The findings indicate short-term gains for bird diversity versus drained grassland though researchers stress this is one case study and call for further monitoring at additional locations including other wildlife groups.
