According to a report from The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India plans to extend chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract beyond its June 2026 expiration. The extension would last until June 2027. Under Agarkar’s leadership, the Indian team secured victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team also advanced to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup hosted in India. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, the board reportedly wants to keep him in the position.

A BCCI official stated that the team experienced a smooth transition and demonstrated courage in making tough choices during his term. The board believes he should remain. Officials plan to discuss this with him during IPL matches.

Meanwhile, although Suryakumar Yadav guided India to a successful defense of the T20 World Cup title, concerns about his inconsistent batting raise doubts about his involvement in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics campaign.

India’s upcoming tour to England and Ireland in June-July will be pivotal for the captain, with his batting performance under close examination rather than his leadership.

This series may determine if he receives an extension for the next two years leading to major events in 2028, including the Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Suryakumar continues to be the top pick for head coach Gautam Gambhir, who anticipates his own contract renewal until the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia.

However, it remains to be seen if the selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, shares this perspective, especially since the T20 captain will be nearing 38 by the Olympics.

A BCCI source, speaking anonymously to PTI, noted that while Suryakumar is currently leading the team, he must achieve consistent batting results. He will captain in the UK, but future decisions up to 2028 will depend on performance.

In 2025, Suryakumar struggled with a strike rate below 120 and no half-centuries. His form improved in 2026, with four half-centuries at a strike rate over 160 by the T20 World Cup’s end.

Yet, during the T20 World Cup, apart from the opening match against the USA, his contributions were limited. Against stronger opponents, he scored 18 against South Africa, 18 against West Indies, 11 against England in the semi-final, and 0 in the final against New Zealand.

Given India’s strong top-order options and emerging talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Suryakumar must regain reliable form to secure his place.
