Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes received the Premier League player of the season award on Saturday. He helped his team finish third in the table and matched the league record for assists with one match remaining. Fernandes equalled the mark of 20 assists previously set by former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry and ex-Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The Portugal player also netted eight goals during the campaign as United earned a top-three spot and Champions League qualification.

The 31-year-old was shortlisted with Arsenal players Gabriel, David Raya and Declan Rice, Manchester City pair Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Brentford striker Igor Thiago.

Fernandes led the league in chance creation with 132, ahead of Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai on 89.

He had earlier been voted Football Writers’ Association men’s player of the year and collected his club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the fifth time.

United face Brighton on Sunday in their final fixture, giving Fernandes a chance to break the assists record outright.
