Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has criticized ex-teammate Alastair Cook’s views on emerging player Jacob Bethell’s situation with his IPL team. Bethell, who has not featured in any matches during IPL 2026, was advised by Cook to return home for county matches. Pietersen, however, believes that being part of the IPL environment, surrounded by top global talent, offers more value to Bethell’s growth, even without playing time.

Pietersen shared his thoughts on social media, arguing that Cook lacks understanding of the IPL’s unique atmosphere and the benefits of constant exposure to elite players. He encouraged Bethell to remain in India, emphasizing that the experience would enhance his skills significantly.

Bethell joined the team for Rs 2.6 crore in the 2025 auction but has only appeared in two games over the past season and a half. Pietersen highlighted the advantages of training alongside international stars, including a prominent Indian batsman, and building connections with leading coaches and players. He also noted the value of familiarizing oneself with Indian conditions for future tours.

In contrast, Pietersen dismissed the idea that participating in early-season county cricket would be more beneficial. Cook, speaking on a podcast, expressed concern that Bethell’s inactivity in the IPL was not ideal and suggested he could contribute to his county side instead.

The team has seven remaining fixtures in IPL 2026, but Bethell’s opportunities appear limited due to a fixed lineup of overseas players.
