The management of the Indian cricket team is contemplating giving a break to prominent players such as Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah for the single Test match against Afghanistan, scheduled from June 6 to 10. This decision stems from a demanding schedule immediately after the IPL 2026 ends. Since the game does not contribute to World Test Championship points and offers minimal recovery time, prioritizing player workload is essential. Emerging talents like Gurnoor Brar, Manav Suthar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Harsh Dubey might receive their first international selections.

New Delhi:

Following the IPL 2026 conclusion on May 31, India’s international commitments intensify, prompting careful oversight of player fatigue before squad announcements. With just a short interval between the IPL final and the Afghanistan Test, leading athletes could be sidelined for the longer format and instead feature in the subsequent ODI series.

Sources indicate that the team leadership will decide ultimately, but deliberations are ongoing, with selectors observing the progress of regular Test squad members in the IPL. These talks remain flexible, especially as no championship points are involved, raising the likelihood that key figures—including captain Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and other dual-format mainstays—will be rested.

Circumstances might shift if teams like Gujarat Titans or Mumbai Indians exit playoff races early. All possibilities are being considered, with a definitive squad selection anticipated for the Test and the three ODIs.

“The brief window between the IPL final and the Afghanistan Test means selectors and management must avoid overexerting players, particularly with upcoming ODIs and a white-ball tour of England,” a source explained. “Without WTC points at stake, stakeholders are focused on workload balance, as many players face nearly two months of continuous travel and a heavy cricket calendar ahead.

“Prioritizing ODIs and WTC matches ensures top performers remain in peak condition for series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, plus numerous ODIs. Risking someone like Bumrah in this Test seems unnecessary.”

Selectors have also been monitoring domestic fast bowlers and spinners, potentially leading to debut opportunities in the Mullanpur match starting June 6. Gurnoor Brar and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar have caught attention, having featured in India A squads. They, along with Harsh Dubey, Auqib Nabi, and Devdutt Padikkal, could be included if resting stars creates openings. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s bowling progress keeps him in contention.

“This selection committee avoids hasty decisions. It’s evident that Gurnoor, Manav, Harsh, Auqib, and Devdutt have performed well. Outcomes will depend on consultations between the leadership and medical staff, emphasizing efficient resource management. Exposing star players to a five-day game without WTC value isn’t ideal.”

“Moreover, the quick shift from Test to ODI series means multi-format players like Gill, Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja would transition from T20 to Test to ODIs rapidly. The captain and coach have previously highlighted scheduling concerns and may influence the outcome,” the source added.

India’s June itinerary includes Tests and ODIs against Afghanistan, T20Is versus Ireland, followed by a white-ball tour of England with three T20Is and three ODIs. A three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe begins July 23.
