The PGA of America revealed on Friday that Jim Furyk will serve as captain for the United States Ryder Cup team at the 2027 competition in Ireland. This move aims to help the American side regain momentum against a European squad that has prevailed in most encounters over the past 30 years. Furyk joins a select group as the fourth American captain to receive a second opportunity since 1979, the start of the contemporary Ryder Cup format that includes players from across Europe.

According to reports from the Associated Press, the selection committee picked Furyk after Tiger Woods opted out of consideration following his arrest on March 27 for suspected impaired driving. Nathan Charnes, PGA of America vice president, stated that Furyk has been a key presence in the US team environment for almost three decades. He described Furyk as a dependable and highly regarded leader with extensive Ryder Cup knowledge that will bolster the team.

Furyk previously captained the team in 2018 in Paris, where Europe secured a 17.5-10.5 victory. That event featured struggles from the four American wild-card selections, who posted a 2-10-0 record at Le Golf National. Additionally, Patrick Reed expressed frustration over not partnering with Jordan Spieth and being sidelined twice by Furyk.

More recently, Furyk guided the US to success as Presidents Cup captain in 2024 and provided steady guidance as an assistant to captain Keegan Bradley in the latest Ryder Cup. Furyk expressed that leading the team again is a great privilege and pledged to position the players for success in recapturing the trophy on European territory.

In the previous year’s event at Bethpage Black, Europe established a seven-point advantage after the first two days and maintained it for a consecutive win under captain Luke Donald, who will lead for a third time in Ireland. Bradley’s selection for 2025 came unexpectedly after the PGA delayed the decision until summer 2024 to gauge Woods’ interest.

This cycle, the PGA established an informal end-of-March deadline for Woods’ decision, preparing alternatives for the committee if he declined. Details on Woods’ inclinations were unclear when his vehicle struck a trailer towed by a truck on a Florida street, causing his SUV to overturn. Authorities arrested and briefly detained Woods after confirming impairment. Shortly after, Woods announced an indefinite break to pursue treatment and prioritize his well-being, informing the PGA he would not take the captaincy.

Other Americans who have captained twice since 1979 include Davis Love III (2012 and 2016), Tom Watson (1993 and 2014), and Jack Nicklaus (1983 and 1987). Love and Nicklaus handled home matches both times. Furyk must overcome the challenge of securing an away victory, something the US has not achieved since 1993.

Following a strong win at Hazeltine in 2016, the Americans faltered at Le Golf National in 2018, with its tight fairways and heavy rough. After an initial 3-1 edge, they failed to win any further sessions. Woods, fresh from a Tour Championship triumph, finished 0-4; Phil Mickelson went 0-2; and Bryson DeChambeau recorded 0-3, all as captain’s choices. DeChambeau had claimed two FedEx Cup playoff wins beforehand.

Europe has triumphed in 11 of the past 15 contests since 1995 at Oak Hill. Donald seeks to be the first captain to claim three consecutive victories at Adare Manor in September 2027.
