MS Dhoni is recognized as one of India’s top cricket leaders and a dedicated patriot. During his playing days, he often prioritized national duties over personal matters, as recounted by ex-teammates. He joined the Indian Army following an honorary appointment and earned the esteemed Maroon Beret. However, the choice to award him this status faced early opposition. Former Lt. Gen. Vinod Bhatia recounted an intriguing anecdote about how his views on the cricketer’s honorary role shifted.
During a podcast, Bhatia disclosed his initial doubts about granting the rank to a non-military individual, questioning if it would maintain the paratrooper’s honor. But after observing Dhoni’s sincere dedication, he reconsidered.
‘Our leader then was General VK Singh,’ Bhatia stated. ‘He proposed that MS Dhoni, captain of the Indian squad at the time, receive an honorary position. I had reservations. The Maroon Beret holds great value; qualifying as a paratrooper requires six months of intense training. It’s extremely demanding, with just a 20% success rate, designed to test resolve. Awarding it without that process seemed inappropriate.’
Nevertheless, Dhoni demonstrated his capability. Bhatia highlighted that Dhoni performed soldierly responsibilities, including a posting near the Line of Control (LoC).
‘MS Dhoni has contributed significantly to the nation. I take great pride in his accomplishments. Known as ‘Captain Cool,’ he showed tremendous enthusiasm. He confided in me about his fear of heights, but he proceeded with the jumps anyway. He finished his paratrooper training leaps and consistently respected the uniform. He conducted himself like a proper soldier; it was clear he had a soldier’s spirit. He also deployed to Jammu and Kashmir alongside our troops, reaching the Line of Control. His drive was truly impressive.’
Dhoni possesses the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army (106 Para TA Battalion), granted in 2011. He can wear the distinguished maroon beret and Para Wing badge, having qualified as a paratrooper in 2015 by completing five required parachute descents.
