Archaeologists have discovered more than 3,000 artefacts in a stream valley in the Netherlands, including a rare gold ring, ancient tools and medieval jewellery. The finds offer new understanding of how people have depended on water sources across thousands of years. The objects range from the Stone Age to the Second World War and form one of the country’s notable recent archaeological discoveries, according to a research article in Academia.

The items were recovered from the Nieuwe Drostendiep stream valley in Drenthe province during ongoing environmental restoration work.

More than 600 objects of historical importance were identified. As part of the project, researchers examined the valley’s upper soil layers and collected over 3,000 items, around 600 of which are regarded as especially significant.
