A wedding in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has drawn attention for a family’s compassionate response to loss. After their son died of cancer, the in-laws continued to regard their daughter-in-law as family and arranged her remarriage to help her move forward. During the ceremony, the father-in-law performed the Kanyadaan ritual usually done by the bride’s parents. He told ANI that the family saw it as their duty to support her fresh start, having accepted her as their daughter, and hoped the example would encourage others to back remarriages for widowed women. Guests described the act as thoughtful and progressive, potentially shifting attitudes toward such unions. The bride’s father said he had not expected the in-laws to take this step but recalled their promise, made about a year after the death, to treat her as their own child and assist with a new life. He expressed gratitude that they kept the pledge through the arrangements and ongoing care, wishing similar support for women facing hardship.
