On Sunday, US President Donald Trump declared that the US Navy would soon implement a blockade on vessels entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that recent negotiations with Iran had succeeded on most issues but failed on the critical matter of nuclear activities. Trump directed the Navy to halt all ship movements in the strait and to intercept any vessels in international waters that had paid fees to Iran, describing such payments as unlawful. He further announced plans to eliminate mines placed by Iran in the area and warned of severe retaliation against any Iranian forces attacking US or civilian ships. Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities have been significantly weakened due to its nuclear pursuits, including the loss of its navy, air force, and key leaders. The blockade, he said, would involve participation from other nations and aims to prevent Iran from gaining financially from what he called extortion. Trump added that US forces are fully prepared and could complete the dismantling of remaining Iranian assets if needed. This announcement comes after unsuccessful discussions with Iran held in Pakistan, heightening concerns about oil market stability.
