Physicist and presenter Brian Cox revealed that his upcoming live show, Emergence, draws from Johannes Kepler’s 17th-century work, The Six-Cornered Snowflake. Kepler, known for his planetary motion laws, pondered the six-sided structure of snowflakes during a 1609 walk in Prague, questioning their symmetry without understanding atomic principles. Cox highlighted Kepler’s admission of ignorance as groundbreaking, noting the show examines known facts, unresolved mysteries, and possibly unanswerable queries.

When asked which unsolved scientific puzzle he most wants resolved, Cox expressed interest in discovering extraterrestrial life, either in our solar system or beyond. He pointed to ongoing missions, including two probes heading to Jupiter’s moons and the James Webb Space Telescope’s ability to analyze distant planetary atmospheres, which could reveal signs of life.

Responding to a query from actor Damian Lewis about whether music qualifies as science or art, Cox rejected strict categorizations, arguing that both fields stem from humanity’s reaction to the world’s beauty and enigmas.

Cox identified artificial intelligence as a field poised for major advances in the coming decade, acknowledging its unpredictable growth as both thrilling and concerning. He also mentioned quantum computing, where expert opinions vary widely on its timeline, underscoring the revolutionary yet uncertain nature of these innovations.

Cox admitted to shifting views on social media, initially seeing it as a positive tool for diverse exchanges but now viewing it as a source of misinformation that harms political discourse.

The best guidance Cox received was to pursue passions, a principle his parents applied by supporting his early music ambitions before he switched to astronomy, despite its unconventional path in his Manchester upbringing.

On popular culture, Cox suggested that musical innovation has declined since the rapid changes from the 1950s to the 1980s, with less distinction among recent decades’ styles.
