Former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova recovered from losing the opening set to defeat fifth seed Mirra Andreeva 4-6 7-5 6-4 on Wednesday and reach the third round at the All England Club.
The Czech player began strongly against the 19-year-old Russian, who claimed her first major title at the French Open recently, but lost momentum after leading 3-0 and dropped the first set on Centre Court.
Krejcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon winner with a French Open title as well, regained form in the second set to force a deciding set. Andreeva showed signs of frustration against consistent play.
Andreeva saved six match points in the final set but could not prevent Krejcikova from securing her second career win over the teenager.
Krejcikova described the contest as a major battle and praised her opponent’s talent. She expressed pride in winning on Centre Court and will next face compatriot Nikola Bartunkova. Andreeva reflected on the loss after her recent success in Paris.
